About the Business

Instead of becoming a non-profit arts organization, Williams decided to follow an entrepreneurial path that would allow him more financial and curatorial freedom.

Contemporary exhibition space and fine art press. We also offer art consultation for both private and corporate clients. The space is rented often for private events.

  • In 1993 San Francisco was on the verge of the dot com boom and the Bay Area was at the center of technological innovation. At this nexus, a small art gallery, Gallery 16 and its companion fine art press, Urban Digital Color began a remarkable and groundbreaking project. The marriage of art and technology that defined the business relationship between Gallery 16 and UDC also defined a new and pioneering concept in art funding. Artist Griff Williams started the companion businesses after his MFA studies at San Francisco Art Institute. His father, Congressman Pat Williams (D Montana) was a leading champion for the Arts in the fight surrounding Federal funding for the National Endowment for the Arts. This bitter fight over the government's role in supporting arts organizations helped shape the model that became Gallery 16.
