About the Business
The Red Poppy Art House is an on-site exploration in cultural-artistic-community engagement in the residential sector of the Mission District of San Francisco. With an aesthetic often likened to small cafés found on the back streets of European and South American cities, the Art House serve as a micro-center for artistic development, experimentation, and presentation, framed within the intimate setting of a 650 square foot commercial locale.
Through this context, we seek to make visible the full living of artists, making the space itself as accessible and familiar and as one's neighborhood corner store. Continually shape-shifting in form, the Art House unifies working artist studio, concert hall, classroom, and everyday meeting ground where new relationships are forged.
Our ideal is to wed the arts to everyday life, immersed in both the richness and the complexity of challenges inherent in our own community and the greater society at large.

- In February 2003, Alexander Allende and Todd Brown signed a lease on a big empty room that had one closet and a bathroom, along with two layers of decades-old linoleum flooring, wall-to-wall. The location was on the corner of Folsom and 23rd streets in San Francisco. It was there that Todd and Alex co-founded an interdisciplinary artist space named "Porfilio Is - Mission Art House". The following year Todd and Alex dissolved the partnership and Todd formed a new partnership with Mark Eisner, coming under the umbrella of his organization Red Poppy, "Porfilio Is" became the "Red Poppy Art House". Since that time the Art House has evolved to incorporate weekend concert/performance series and a monthly film night, and has broadened it's educational base to include workshops in painting, drawing, and monotype printing. In 2005, the Art House became independent from the support of Red Poppy 501c3 (though it still carries the name), and has continued to ever widen its creative circle.
