- Central Investment Company was founded in Milwaukee by U.S. Senator John Lendrum Mitchell, former president of the Wisconsin Marine and Fire Insurance Company Bank (later known simply as the Marine Bank, now a part of JPMorgan Chase & Co.). In 1887, upon the death of his father, financier, and railroad tycoon Alexander Mitchell, John inherited his father's bank and real estate holdings. When the bank failed in the Panic of 1893, he liquidated his assets to repay its depositors in full. March 5, 1895 Mitchell and fellow bank officers E. J. Lindsay, Thomas J. Durnin, and Washington Becker incorporated Central Investment Company. The Company owned and managed the Mitchell Building at 207 East Michigan Street, home of the Marine Bank, and the Chamber of Commerce Building at 225 East Michigan Street, home of the Grain Exchange--one of the first commodity exchanges in the United States and birthplace of the "trading pit".
