- Under new ownership! Over the last 137 years, this beautiful example of turn-of-the-century Louisiana architecture has served as a landmark on Saint Charles Avenue in New Orleans Upper Garden District. Built as a private home in 1883 by wealthy tabacco merchant Simon Hernsheim, The Columns is the only remaining example of a large group of Italianate style homes designed by the renowned New Orleans architect Thomas Sully. In 1980, previous proprietor Jacques Creppel listed the property in the National Register of Historic Places. The Victorian Lounge, with its gilded bronze chandeliers, dark carved mahogany walls, and coffered coved ceiling, has come to be known as a popular destination for tourists and locals alike. The Hotel's front porch, overlooking the historic Saint Charles Avenue streetcar line, provides unparalleled viewing of New Orleans' famous Mardi Gras parades. The Columns is also available for cocktails, bistro dining and Private catered events and wedding receptions.
