- OCTOBER 1914 - At the cost of $100,000, John Shaffer purchased the first 2,660 acres of what would eventually become Ken Caryl Ranch. He and his wife Virginia would name the area after their two sons, Kent and Carroll. He commissioned the architect Edbrooke, famous for his work on the Brown Palace and Oxford Hotel, to build him a summer home on the property. The home was to sit at the highest point of the four-mile-wide valley complete with 360 degree views. The Shaffers entertained frequent guests such as Presidents Theodore Roosevelt and William Howard Taft, as well as other industrial chieftains, actors, musicians and other prominent figures of the era. We are proud to continue this tradition of hosting special guests and memorable events at the historic Manor House.
