- I spent the first 18 years of my career as a "Captive" Agent. A Captive agent is defined as an insurance agent who only works for one insurance company. Meaning I had only one product and one rate. As an "Independent" Insurance Broker, I can sell policies from an array of companies. This arrangement can be better for clients because the agent can seek out the best policy for that client's needs, often at a rate significantly less than a Captive Agent can offer. Companies that utilize Independent Insurance Agents rely on their agents to educate their customers on their unique offerings. They often do less advertising and those savings are passed directly to you, the customer. On average, I have saved my clients 20% - 40% and more, oftentimes giving them BETTER coverage than they had. It's a WIN/WIN situation. You get a better price, and get to keep your agent.
