- The Rothko Chapel opened in 1971 after the Dominique and John de Menil commission the artist Mark Rothko to create a sacred space for Houston. Over the years, prominent spiritual, artistic, and human rights leaders have visited and spoken at the Chapel such as Nelson Mandela, Archbishop Desmond Tutu, the Dalai Lama to name a few. The Chapel hosts programs throughout the year and is open to all on a daily basis to view the art and visit the space.
