- Registered by the Rittenhouse Square Historic District, the Stotesbury Mansion is a historic landmark perfect for hosting your upcoming special event! Originally a townhouse built in 1897 by architects Cope & Stewardson, the site has been renovated numerous times by a famous English designer, Lord Joseph Duveen, to accommodate & impress the Philadelphia Elite Stotesbury Family's guests. In 1914, the Stotesburys constructed a grand ballroom for .5 million dollars to entertain their affluent guests. They imported a Georgian ballroom that was in the Lord's manor in England. The mansion has been graced with the presence of many US presidents including President Taft, McKinley & Roosevelt. In October 1925, the Philopatrian Literary Institute purchased the Mansion to host affairs for special occasions today. Since November 1992, the Philopatrians have shared some of its great fortunes with Philadelphia by allowing outside affairs to be held at the mansion.
