- This is a new business for an old skill. I've been making things from wood for over five decades. In fact I teach woodworking classes at Ace Monster Toys in Oakland. For a while I did many different kinds of carpentry and handyman work, but I found that fences are an ideal business for me. Most houses have fences, and even if they last 50 years there is still a steady and ongoing demand for fence repairs and replacement. I found I could keep my schedule full providing only fence and gate services. Now that is all I do. The experience I've gained helps me to make more accurate estimates.
