- In July 1931, the American Institute of Interior Decorators (AAID) - the first national, professional, interior decoration organization in the USA - is created in Grand Rapids, MI. In November, a charter is issued to the Northern California District Chapter of AIID. The name ASID American Society of Interior Designers is officially adopted in 1975 and California North chapter is one of the foundations of this design association. Over the years, there have been changes in names, locations & membership, but one thing has always remained: ASID is a community of people driven by a common love for design and committed to the belief that interior design, as a service to people, is a powerful, multi-faceted profession that can positively change people's lives. Through education, knowledge sharing, advocacy, community building & outreach, the Society strives to advance the interior design profession and in the process, to demonstrate the power of design to positively change people's lives.
