About the Business

More Than Words (MTW) is an organization that empowers young people who are part of the foster care, court-involved, homeless, or out of school populations to take control of their lives by taking charge of a business. The organization believes that, with enough responsibility and support, these youth can overcome any personal obstacles they may face and become important members of society.

MTW began in 2004 as an online bookselling training program for those in DCF custody. In 2005, they opened their first bookstore in Waltham, MA, followed by the addition of a Starbucks coffee bar in 2008. They replicated this model in Boston's South End in 2011, allowing them to serve double the amount of youth annually.

In September 2018, MTW expanded their South End location. This allowed them to hire more young people, display a larger variety of books, host events in their dedicated space, and sell items created by other social enterprises from around the country.

  • More Than Words began in 2004 as Teen LEEP (Leadership, Employment &Enrichment Program), an online bookselling venture to provide employment and entrepreneurship training for teens in the foster care system. The pilot began in a small 150 sq. ft. office in Watertown with four young men from a local DCF (Department of Children and Families) group home, a few donated laptops and one bookshelf of donated books. In two short months it was necessary to move to a larger 650 sq. ft space and by June, 2005, Teen LEEP had both a storefront in Waltham, and a new name determined by the youth - More Than Words. The storefront space allowed MTW to increase the number of youth served as well as to focus on additional employment skills including retail management, event planning, and customer service training. The storefront also positioned our youth to gain confidence, poise and communication skills, as they were interacting with the community on a daily basis.
