In the United States, adults who haven't completed high school often face limitations in career choices and educational advancement. The HiSET® (High School Equivalency Test) provides these individuals with an opportunity to demonstrate knowledge and skills equivalent to high school graduates. Upon successful completion, test-takers receive a high school equivalency credential, enhancing both their educational standing and career prospects.

What Is the HiSET® Exam?

The HiSET® assesses knowledge in five core subject areas: reading, writing, mathematics, science, and social studies. Comprising five subtests, the exam offers flexibility with the option to take each section on different dates. All tests are available in English or Spanish. The complete examination requires approximately seven hours, divided into separate sections (ranging from 70 to 120 minutes each), allowing participants to schedule tests over several months.

Eligibility Requirements

Prospective examinees must reside in one of the 26 states or five U.S. territories that offer the HiSET®. While requirements vary by state, most jurisdictions mandate that candidates be at least 18 years old and not have completed high school. Some exceptions permit 16- or 17-year-olds to participate. Certain states may also require preparatory coursework.

U.S. citizenship isn't required for test participation, but valid identification must be presented. Some states additionally request proof of residency.

Exam Content

The HiSET® evaluates proficiency through five distinct subjects:

  • Reading
  • Writing (including an essay component)
  • Mathematics
  • Science
  • Social Studies

Each subject is tested separately through multiple-choice questions and written responses, comprehensively assessing fundamental knowledge and problem-solving abilities across multiple disciplines.

Preparation Resources

USAHello offers complimentary online courses to help candidates prepare for either the HiSET® or GED® exams. These courses cover four subject areas—social studies, language arts, science, and mathematics—with instruction available in English and Spanish. The platform supports learning via computer, tablet, or smartphone, enabling flexible study schedules.

Test Day Preparation

Successful candidates recommend:

  • Confirming registration and payment completion
  • Verifying test location and time
  • Prioritizing adequate sleep
  • Eating a balanced meal beforehand
  • Arriving early with valid photo identification

Scoring and Results

The HiSET® employs a points-based scoring system where each subject has a maximum score of 20. Passing requires:

  • Minimum 8 points per subtest
  • At least 2 points on the essay
  • Combined score of 45+ across all five subjects

Successful examinees receive their high school equivalency credential through state-issued channels. Those who don't pass a subject may retake it twice within 12 months. Official scores are typically available within three business days for multiple-choice sections and six business days for essays.
