About the Business

Penn Brewery is a historic North Side landmark in Pittsburgh that shares the story of the city's European immigrants through its award-winning craft beers and homestyle cuisine. Established in the mid-nineteenth century, the brewery and restaurant are located in the E&O Brewery Building in Deutschtown and specialize in German-style beers, all brewed onsite. The restaurant serves classic Euro-Pittsburgh dishes such as wurst, schnitzel, pierogi, and goulash. Penn is open for lunch and dinner Monday to Saturday from 11am to midnight and features live entertainment, as well as a seasonal cobblestone biergarten. Private parties can be booked, and free parking is available.

With our commitment to service and customer satisfaction, we strive to exceed expectations each and every time. Contact us today to find out how we can help.

  • Penn Brewery's roots extend back to1848 and the Eberhart and Ober families, Germans who settled in the City of Allegheny. Eberhart and Ober opened three breweries on the site where Penn exists today and three of the original buildings remain. E&O brewed at this location for several decades and eventually merged with other regional breweries to form Pittsburgh Brewing Company in 1899. Beer production continued until 1952. Today's Penn Brewery beer brand was born in 1986, when the flagship Penn Pilsner was initially contract manufactured. In 1989, management moved brand production to the E&O site. The restaurant also opened here in 1989 as Allegheny Brewery & Pub and was then renamed Penn Brewery in 1994. Penn Brewery was sold to, and ultimately closed by, a new group of owners, who then sold it yet again in 2009. The present ownership group restarted brewing and reopened the restaurant in 2010, and continues to make award-winning beers and Euro-Pittsburgh cuisine.
