About the Business

1840s Plaza is a one-of-a-kind destination located in Baltimore's historic Jonestown neighborhood, just a few steps away from Little Italy, Harbor East and the Inner Harbor. The Fava Building, which used to be home to the Baltimore City Life Museums, has been transformed into a unique and elegant space and celebrates the city's diversity and rich history. Hand-painted murals, vignettes of city scenes, antiques, artwork and even the original White Tower Diner from 1950s can be found here.

The 1840s Carrollton Inn, a thirteen-room boutique bed and breakfast, is situated across the charming garden courtyard from the event venues and offers luxurious accommodations with whirlpool tubs, fireplaces, antique furnishings and artwork. A full gourmet breakfast is served daily and included with an overnight stay.

  • In 1996 the Fava building, on the north side of the courtyard, was opened as the Morton K. Blaustein City Life Exhibition Center. Four floors of exhibits and galleries illustrated Baltimore's distinct history and culture over three centuries. Its signature feature was the reuse of the cast iron facade of the 1869 G. Fava Fruit Company. Over 100 cast iron buildings existed in Baltimore before the Fire of 1904. Today less than 12 remain. Despite its many awards, the museum found that the crowds had not appeared and attendance was a disaster. Budgets were cut, leaving the city only one option -closure in 1997. The buildings were retained as city property until 2003 when the space was bought by the Pomykala family, who combined the row homes into the 1840s Carrollton Inn and created the 1840s Plaza. The top floor with its panoramic views of Baltimore, is home to the popular 1840s Ballroom. The Space contains a 90-foot mural of Baltimore life in 1840 and English pub bar.
