  • Milltown Historic District owner Eddie Thomae is proud to share with visitors his ancestral and Milltown history. His ancestor, Carl Wilhelm Thomae, was one of the original 202 German settlers of New Braunfels and its first Post Master. After the 1836 formation of the Republic of Texas, the new nation offered public land to Americans and Europeans to pay off its war debts. A group of German noblemen were enticed and formed an immigration company to purchase land in Texas. Prince Carl of Solms-Braunfels, Germany founded New Braunfels in 1845 on the Comal River. Successful craftsmen, farmers, ranchers and abundant water for mills from large springs contributed to its prosperity. The German influence in tradition, culture and language is still prominent. In 1922, Mission Valley Mills opened on the old Austin-San Antonio Highway next to the 1887 Faust Street Bridge. The textile mill was once the largest New Braunfels employer employing one-third of the workforce in town.
