- The garden officially opened in 1962 after four Miami Beach garden clubs established the area as a space for meetings, horticultural education, and plant displays in a glass conservatory. The land was owned by the city and was officially a park known as The Garden Center. In 1998, the city commission officially changed the name from The Garden Center, to the Miami Beach Botanical Garden. Today, the garden is managed by a board of directors who are in a public-private management agreement with the city of Miami Beach.
