- Identified by the Indiana Historical Society; The building at 42 E. Washington St. is currently the oldest surviving commercial structure in the city. Records indicate that the building was erected at some point in the mid 1930s. The history is told through pictures, stories, books, and news articles. Imagine someone peering out the window of the top floor watching President Abraham Lincoln come through on his way to Washington DC via horse and buggy. This building stands today as a monument to this history because of the vision and philanthropic support of Jim and Linda Hunter. In 2014, the Hunters finished renovating the entire building from the foundation up. Leaving no stone unturned, the Hunter's commitment to excellence is evident on every floor of the building. Recognized today as Gallery Forty-Two, a fine art gallery, and event space. Gallery Forty-Two is a popular choice for weddings, events, and special occasions.
