- In 1927, a milestone in film history occurred. Hollywood's very first "talkie" was released - The Jazz Singer, starring Al Jolson. The addition of spoken dialogue and music into films was a huge success, and the silent movie business quickly began diminishing. Not only were silent movie stars affected, but so were everyday people like Ray de Steiger. Ray was a piano player in theatres that showed silent movies. As sound film grew in popularity, there was eventually no need for his piano talents. After searching for a new career, Ray found success in the electrical supply business with his son, Ray Jr. Over seventy-five years later, Ray Electric operates four locations throughout southeastern Michigan, and has become one of the top electrical distributors in the country.
