About the Business
The Downing-Gross Cultural Arts Center is a unique 52,000 square foot facility dedicated to providing cultural activities and experiences for the entire family. Located in the historic Walter Reed School, the center was restored and opened to the public in October 2008. It features the Ella Fitzgerald Theater, Youth Programming floor, Anderson Johnson Gallery, Newport News Community Gallery, banquet room, multipurpose room, and Executive boardroom.
The Downing-Gross Cultural Arts Center provides a variety of free and paid events each month, such as concerts, plays, dance performances, movies, children's programming and instruction. The center also offers rentable space for functions, meetings, private parties, and weddings. Past performances have included orchestral ensembles, local and national recording artists, stage plays, and dance companies.
