- Mt. Helix Park was built in 1924 as a memorial to Mary Carpenter Yawkey by her two children after the land was gifted to them by the Col. Ed and Mary Fletcher. The 35-foot concrete cross and 1600 seat amphitheater was completed in time for Easter sunrise service in 1925. After the death of Mrs. Carpenter Yawkey, her children put the park in a perpetual trust and gifted it the County of San Diego in 1929. The park continued to be a site for the annual Easter sunrise service amongst other cultural events. During the 1990s, the Park faced legal battles in the courts. Parties opposed the government maintaining a park with a religious symbol. In 1999 the Mt. Helix Park Foundation was formed by community members the GMIA and awarded as successor trustee of the property. The Foundation runs the park solely on private donations and volunteer work. It hosts an annual gala at the Park which raises about a third of its operation budget. The gala is a community favorite!
