Hickory Street Annex
Built in 1921, Hickory Street Annex once served as the Gulf Oil Corporation's distribution center for its North Texas region. The building, located at the corner of Hickory Street and Second Avenue in Deep Ellum, provided automobile maintenance services and storage space for products from the company and its customers. An eye-catching ghost sign of “Gulf Oil Corporation” is still visible today from the nearby freeway.
In the late 1950s, Gulf Oil Corporation moved out and the C.H.Collier Company took over the space until the mid 1980s. Elm Development and 5/828 Properties, Inc. then purchased the complex and used it to host Moonstruck Theater and the Deep Ellum Opera Theatre. In 1997, Gary Kaelson bought the property and began leasing it out to small businesses.
