- In 1947, a group of telephone company workers decided to start a credit union as a better option for saving and borrowing money. They opened Washington Telephone Federal Credit Union (WTFCU) in September 1947. In 1958 WTFCU dedicated its first main office at 10th and Eye Streets and became the first credit union to have a home office in Washington, DC. In 1980 the credit union moved it main office to Kensington, Maryland. The credit union has served telephone company employees and their families for most of its history, but began offering membership to small- and medium-sized companies of any industry starting in the 1980s. In 2007, the credit union changed its name to Signal Financial Federal Credit Union. Today, Signal has several branches in the Washington, DC area, and serves over 22,000 members and over 200 businesses throughout the country.
