- One of the great architectural landmarks of the downtown Pittsburgh business district is the old Pennsylvanian Railroad Terminal first erected in 1863-65 and was originally called Union Station. Originally containing a hotel and restaurant the Italianate structure burned during the Pittsburgh Railroad riots of 1877 and was rebuilt in 1882. In 1898, The D.H. Burnham firm was commissioned to design a new station with construction beginning in 1900. In 1912, Union Station became Pennsylvanian Station and eventually Penn Central Station in 1967. The building entered the National Register of Historic Places in 1976. Amtrak, the station's last tenant, left in 1979 to move into a pace behind the site. The building was renovated in the late 1980's to hold Luxury Apartments and a commercial space keeping the unique grandeur.
