If universities are temples of knowledge, graduate schools represent their highest sanctum. Florida State University (FSU) has taken a significant step in advancing its graduate education by appointing Dr. Steve McDowell, a distinguished scholar in communication studies, as interim dean of its Graduate School, effective August 25, 2025.

Dr. McDowell brings an exceptional academic reputation to the role. A professor in the College of Communication and Information, he previously served as the college’s interim dean, gaining extensive administrative experience. His additional role as Assistant Provost for International Affairs has further equipped him with deep expertise in global educational partnerships—a background that positions him strongly for this leadership transition.

As interim dean, Dr. McDowell will oversee the Graduate School’s daily operations and strategic direction, focusing on enhancing educational quality and refining graduate training systems. Key priorities are expected to include strengthening academic disciplines, recruiting top-tier students, expanding international collaborations, and fostering innovation in graduate education.

With his specialized knowledge in communication, academic administration, and global affairs, Dr. McDowell is poised to bring fresh momentum to FSU’s Graduate School, potentially elevating its standing among U.S. and international institutions.
