New Orleans Pharmacy Museum
The New Orleans Pharmacy Museum is home to America's first licensed pharmacist, Louis Dufilho, Jr. and features a mid-19th Century apothecary shop on its ground floor. Here visitors can explore the primitive medical practices of the time, such as bloodletting and the use of leeches, as well as view hand-blown apothecary bottles filled with crude drugs, medicinal herbs, and other medicinal products. The museum also contains an 1880's linen prescription file and hanging prescription spools that represent record-keeping techniques, as well as an 1855 Italian marble soda fountain that speaks to the opulence of the mid-19th Century. In the courtyard, visitors can discover a 19th Century herb garden and learn about plant-based medicine. In 2013, Wisznia | Architecture + Development transformed the originally named Hennan Building, later known as the Latter & Blum Building, into 105 luxurious downtown New Orleans residences, as well as a Merchant Cafe and BETA Workspace.
