- The Camron-Stanford House is the last of the beautiful 19th century mansions that once surrounded Lake Merritt. In its long life, the house was the private residence of five families instrumental in the development of the City of Oakland and the State of California. In the early 20th century it became the first museum in the City of Oakland. In 1971, a farsighted group saved the house from the wrecking ball and created the Camron-Stanford House Preservation Association. Over the next 40 years, a complete restoration of the house has been accomplished and a restoration of the gardens is underway. Visitors today can walk through authentic rooms that have been meticulously recreated using descriptions found in personal letters, newspaper accounts, vintage photographs and other architectural research.
